BioThe only time the exclamation point is ever, EVER funny is when it is used to suggest the futility and vanity of seriousness. Consider the following example.
Example #1: "I'm going to kill you if it's the last thing I ever do."
The Verdict: Not funny. In fact, somewhat frightening.
Example #2: "I'm going to kill you if it's the last thing I ever do!"
The Verdict: Plenty funny. The person who says this is virtually certain not to follow through on it. They believe they will, but the exclamation point says fear not their wrath, for they are bullshitting. This person can scarcely bring hirself to tear open the cereal box with anything more than the bare minimum of brute force. Laugh and be merry.
When is the exclamation point not funny? Pretty much any other time you use it, but especially when you use it at the end of a sentence that is already obviously intended for humor. Consider the following.
Example #1: "Why did the chicken cross the road?"
"I don't know. Why?"
"To escape John Ashcroft's libidinous advances!"
Not funny. Not funny at all. Again, the exclamation point says CAN YOU BELIEVE HOW FREAKING CLEVER THAT WAS?!?!?! instead of saying No, seriously. No, seriously is funny. CAN YOU BELIEVE HOW FREAKING CLEVER THAT WAS?!?!?! is not.
Unless it's obviously not. Then it is.
Example: "Why did the chicken cross the road?"
"I don't know. Why?"
"To get to the other side."
Not funny. This joke is too old, too not funny, to be funny for any reason other than how not funny it is. If you deadpan this joke, you are a choad.
On the other hand:
"Why did the chicken cross the road?"
"I don't know. Why?"
"TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Plenty funny. Or, if not, admirable for its spunk. Which, considering how un-funny the joke is, is kinda funny.
